Welcome to the Rio Arriba Adult Literacy Program (RAALP)!

Our program offers free, one-to-one adult literacy tutoring for students in need of both Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language support.

About 35% of Rio Arriba County residents lack basic literacy skills, and about the same speak only limited English.
Adult literacy students often make big changes in their lives as their reading, writing, or English-comprehension skills improve. They advance in employment, go back to school, register to vote, or become more involved in their children’s education.

80% of students active in the RAALP program for 6+ months show improvement toward their goals.

Our certified tutors work with students as they attain their personal goals and higher reading levels. Student-tutor pairs meet in public places for two hours, usually one-two times per week, creating a fun and inviting atmosphere for learning.

What are the causes and consequences of low literacy among adults?

Adults with lower levels of literacy are often stigmatized in our society. Common reasons for low literacy among adults in New Mexico include:
  • Poverty and/or leaving school at a young age to take a job and support family
  • Low literacy levels among parents and caregivers
  • Traumatic life events, including violence, family deaths, incarcerated parents, physical abuse, drug abuse
  • Undiagnosed or untreated learning disabilities in school
  • Vision or hearing loss
  • Frequent family moves, sometimes due to the family following seasonal work
  • Immigrant or refugee status, with associated language and/or cultural barriers

Although the impacts of low literacy vary for individuals, they may include:
  • Difficulty obtaining and understanding needed information
  • Lower-quality jobs, low income, or unemployment
  • Negative learning identity, which can lead to avoiding further educational opportunities or isolation
  • Poor health, due to less access to health information and care, misuse of labeled medication, workplace accidents, and other factors.
