Our Philosophy

Equity and humility
The need for English Literacy in Rio Arriba county emerges from a traumatic history of imperial colonialism and the systemic disenfranchisement of indigenous and Mexican literacies. If we are not careful, we can perpetuate this harmful legacy through overconfidence in the virtue of our work. While we believe in English literacy’s value to an adult in this society, we do not measure this value against other forms of literacy.

Multiple literacies

We see literacy as a diverse spectrum, with many facets. The ability to read and write in English is only one such facet. Indeed, even formal languages are only a small portion of the spectrum. We celebrate literacies of all forms--digital, cultural, agricultural, and so on--not only because of their intrinsic value but also because they can build upon each other, and students can improve English literacy from the foundation of their other literacies.

The process of learning
Our students and tutors are human beings with unique emotional and cognitive needs, and we use up-to-date research to determine the best methods for meeting these needs. Using principles of social emotional learning, cognitive science, and andragogical teaching, we help craft lesson plans by starting with the student’s goals and the tutor’s capacity, then seek out what else is needed from there.

Holistic community
Our services contribute to a larger ecosystem of culture, economics, family capacity, and political power for our community--both locally in Rio Arriba and in the cosmopolitan connections our region shares with the rest of the world. Therefore, we are eager to collaborate and merge services amongst all other sectors, reducing the gaps that individuals experience in meeting their needs and achieving their desires.
