RESOURCES FOR TUTORS AND ADULT LEARNERS
The Rio Arriba Adult Literacy Program (RAALP) is committed to providing its adult learners and volunteer tutors the resources they need to navigate this brave new world. To that end, RAALP is providing a list of online resources to facilitate distance learning for students and tutors. Tutors and students can watch video tutorials on a variety of subjects meant to help them teach and learn via software applications and websites. ZOOM
What is Zoom?
Zoom is an online software application that allows you to video and/or voice conference, share content, and chat over your mobile devices, your desktop, telephone, and room systems. With Zoom you can meet with your student face-to-face while still following social distancing guidelines. You and your student can also share your screen for a more interactive approach to your lessons. You can share content such as homework and worksheets during a tutoring session or practice conversational English. The basic Zoom version is free and creating an account is easy. Our partners at ProLiteracy.org have created PowerPoint presentations describing how to create an account; how to start a meeting; and summarizing Zoom controls to include recording, screen sharing, and chatting. What is Padlet? Padlet is an online bulletin or post-it board where tutors and students can have conversations in real time, brainstorm ideas, and share lessons and homework. The Padlet application can be used on Android and Apple devices or on your computer. Bookwidgets' teaching blog shares 30 creative ways to use Padlet. Just click HERE. QUILL
What is Quill?
Quill is a nonprofit organization that offers a free, open source digital platform to help student develop their sentence construction and grammar skills. According to its website, Quill's activities include supplemental writing exercises that students complete over short, 10 to 15 minutes sessions. To learn more, please visit Quill's Getting Started page by clicking HERE. Here you will find PDF documents describing what Quill is; how Quill works, and summarizing Quill's tools to include combining sentences, identifying learning gaps and assigning personalized learning plans, and much more. Flipgrid is a free Microsoft application that allows educators to post discussion prompts and allows students to respond with short videos. This online tool allows students to read a document as a class/group, making comments and answering questions throughout the reading. Through Quizizz teachers can explore millions of teacher-created quizzes in numerous subjects, including English and language arts. Quizizz allows teachers to create their own quizzes. Quizzez includes online games where you can even choose to host your own remote game. There is homework mode, and Quizzez does the grading. Voxy
What is Voxy?
Voxy is a personalized language online application to help non-native speakers learn how to read and speak English. In 2019, Voxy partnered with ProLiteracy "to educate and create opportunities for immigrants, refugees, and other non-native English speakers who do not have the literacy skills necessary to achieve economic security." According to the ProLiteracy website: "The partnership is designed to address the nation’s growing literacy crisis by expanding access of Voxy’s online language instruction to underserved, low-literate communities, which often struggle with long student waiting lists and a lack of instruction tailored to their unique needs."
